A vibrant agenda where art becomes a living experience

The Valencian Community has established itself as a leading cultural hub in the Mediterranean, where art is not only contemplated but also experienced, explored, and celebrated. Throughout the year, a wide range of artistic initiatives and festivals open spaces for contemporary thought, creative innovation, and civic participation, combining tradition, avant-garde, and diversity. Below are some of the most relevant events in the region that turn its cities into epicenters of culture and artistic expression.

Abierto Valencia: The Kick-Off of Contemporary Art in the City

Organized by LAVAC (LaVac – Association of Contemporary Art Galleries of the Valencian Community), Abierto Valencia marks the official start of the artistic season in the city. For one week in late September, contemporary art galleries open their doors with special programming, including simultaneous exhibition openings, guided tours, awards, artist talks, and free activities for all audiences.

More than a collective opening, Abierto Valencia is a statement of intent reflecting the city’s commitment to contemporary culture. The event promotes art collecting and highlights the role of galleries as key drivers of the Valencian artistic ecosystem. Institutions such as the Consorci de Museus, the Hortensia Herrero Foundation, and the University of Valencia actively participate, strengthening the connection between public and private sectors in the promotion of art.

Feria Marte: Contemporary Art in Castellón with Regional Impact

Although held in Castellón, Feria Marte has gained increasing relevance across the entire Valencian Community. This contemporary art fair brings together galleries, artists, curators, and collectors each year at the Palau de la Festa, with a clear mission to make art accessible to a broad audience without compromising quality or curatorial rigor.

Marte stands out for its approachable programming, featuring exhibitions, performances, workshops, and talks designed for both art professionals and curious visitors. The fair strongly supports emerging art, accessible collecting, and cultural decentralization, positioning Castellón as a key destination for discovering new trends in contemporary Spanish art.

Intramurs: Multidisciplinary Art in the Historic Heart of Valencia

Intramurs is an urban contemporary art festival that transforms Valencia’s historic center into a laboratory of creation, dialogue, and artistic experimentation. Over several days in autumn, streets, squares, workshops, abandoned lots, and balconies become stages for performance art, ephemeral installations, sound interventions, exhibitions, dance, and music.

The festival embraces an inclusive, participatory, and multidisciplinary model that breaks down barriers between art and the public. Intramurs promotes culture as a tool for urban and social transformation, engaging local and international artists in projects that connect with public space and neighborhood memory. Its critical spirit, closeness to performance and action art, and focus on the margins make it an essential event for understanding the most contemporary currents of Valencian art.

Las Fallas: Ephemeral, Popular, and Monumental Art

Beyond their festive dimension, Las Fallas of Valencia can be considered one of the world’s greatest manifestations of ephemeral art. Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, they combine satire, social critique, visual creativity, and civic participation in a celebration that involves the entire city.

Every March, hundreds of monumental sculptures—fallas—occupy streets and squares as true works of urban art. Designed by falleros artists and built from cardboard, wood, and other combustible materials, these structures blend narrative ingenuity with meticulous technical execution. The climax comes with the cremà, the night when all the fallas are burned in a collective catharsis that celebrates transience and renews the creative cycle year after year.

Las Fallas represent a unique form of popular art where tradition, design, satire, and fire merge into an unrepeatable aesthetic experience. Their artistic value goes far beyond folklore, and each year they are also a subject of reflection and reinvention by contemporary artists, architects, and designers.

A Continuously Expanding Artistic Scene

Abierto Valencia, Feria Marte, Intramurs, and Las Fallas represent different ways of experiencing art in the Valencian Community: from institutional to independent, from ephemeral to collectible, from popular to experimental. Together, these events energize a diverse artistic scene, deeply rooted in its context yet open to international dialogue, demonstrating that in this region art is not just a discipline, but a shared experience.
